Bible Study–Genesis 3:6-7

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil was beautiful and its fruit was good because everything God creates is beautiful and good. Thus, the temptation to eat from it was real. The tree, according to Martin Luther, was the first altar, the place where Adam practiced honesty about dependence on God and thus on God’s Word to him.

The tree was desirable to make one “wise,” not in the godly sense of the word but “worldly wise.” How were Adam and Eve’s eyes opened? Their eyes and vision were perfect as to what they could see in God’s creation, but now their eyes were opened in a critical way—further corruption against the actual image of God meant that human beings would be judgmental, critical, opinionated, and self-centered in thought and perspective.

Notice the reverse of God’s design: Eve takes then gives to Adam; Adam takes instead of gives. They hid from God and each other behind fig leaves as all humans still do behind images/clothing of human invention.  But that cannot save us or our relationships from the deadly corruption of Adam.
