The readings for Pentecost 9 are taken from Deuteronomy 7:6-9; Romans 8:28-39; and Matthew 13:44-52.
Deuteronomy records Moses reminding the Israelites of God’s reason for bringing them out of bondage and now to the Promised Land. God chose them according to His love, which is steadfast, and why and how He keeps His new testament with us.
Paul explains to the Romans how God’s love for us provides for our sojourn on the course of our life through this world. God makes all things work together for good. If God did not spare His own Son but gave Him up to save us all, how or why would God possibly withhold anything else that would be for our good? Consider how often Jesus referred to God’s promises in order to endure the path of His redeeming work for us.
Matthew records still more parables. This set of three are progressive, not redundant. Our soul is the treasure found in the field of human nature (remember the soils from the past two Sundays?). Jesus redeemed the world—everyone, body and soul. The truth that God’s creation and Word reveal is THE pearl which is beyond compare and which relieves the need for any other. The net is the end of the world; when God gathers all regenerate souls (good fish) in the resurrection of our bodies in perfection in His newly created, perfect, and permanent heavens and earth.
