Sunday Summary: Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost

The readings for the twelfth Sunday after Pentecost are taken from Proverbs 25:2-10; Hebrews 13:1-17; and Luke 14:1-14.

All three lessons speak to how we might be of service to others—care-givers on behalf of God, who is always caring for us.

Proverbs urges us to keep searching for what is best: for God; for righteousness; for higher things, which come by way of humility, not vanity.

Hebrews is a catalog of warnings, commands, and promises. Everything centers around Jesus who sacrificed His whole life, divine and human, in order to give our lives back to us, and our lives are discovered in following where He leads.

Luke records how Jesus served the truth and the truth serves us. The Sabbath was made for man.  Just so, Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath (as He habitually did). God’s economy is the opposite of that of this world. Take the lowest place and know the benefits of doing so.
