The readings for the first Sunday in Lent are taken from Genesis 3:1-21; Romans 5:12-19; and Matthew 4:1-11.
Genesis records the catastrophe of Adam’s rebellion against God and the wreckage that caused with Eve and everyone to follow.
In Romans, Paul plainly holds Adam responsible for all that is wrong BUT also shows us the second Adam, the Seed promised to Eve, conceived by the Holy Spirit in the virgin Mary: Jesus, who makes all things right.
Matthew records how Jesus overcame the temptations that were too great for Adam (and for us). Remember that the whole of Jesus’ life, from conception to ascension, was lived as a substitute for us. The Holy Spirit imputes the life of Jesus to our account in exchange for all that is wrong with us, which Jesus carried to His crucifixion and death. And the Holy Spirit regenerates our souls in the image of Christ, so we actually do live, according to our soul, as Jesus lived (1 John 3–5) .
