The readings for Trinity Sunday are taken from Genesis 1:1—2:4a; Acts 2:14, 22-36; and Matthew 28:16-20.
Moses recorded the history of creation in Genesis. This is a long reading, but not in comparison to what God accomplished. God’s creation of all things, climaxing in the creation of us in His image, is foundational and essential for our lives, our identity, and our relationships with one another and God. The Trinity is evident here: God (the Father) created, the Holy Spirit hovered, and the Word was spoken.
Acts is also a long reading, but not in comparison to the magnitude of the good message that is summarized here. God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are integral to the working out of Jesus’ kingdom of grace and love, beginning at Pentecost.
Matthew concludes his good message account with a confirmation that all authority has been given and remains with Jesus. The image of God is restored in us, His disciples—which is to be awash in the Word of God (“the name of …”). “Awash in the Word” is emphasized and confirmed in the next verse: “teaching to observe all things commanded by Jesus.” The image of God is restored in a soul regenerated by the Word and Spirit of God so that we live and thrive in giving our lives for the good of others.
